This chapter describes how the marriageable daughters of the cowherd men worshiped Kātyāyanī to get Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa as their husband, and how Kṛṣṇa stole the garments of the young girls and gave the girls benedictions.

During the month of Mārgaśīrṣa, every day early in the morning the young daughters of the cowherds would take one another’s hands and, singing of Kṛṣṇa’s transcendental qualities, go to the Yamunā to bathe. Desiring to obtain Kṛṣṇa as their husband, they would then worship the goddess Kātyāyanī with incense, flowers and other items.
Durante el mes de Mārgaśīrṣa, todos los días, temprano por la mañana, las hijas jóvenes de los vaqueros se tomaban de la mano y cantando acerca de las cualidades trascendentales de Kṛṣṇa, iban al Yamunā a bañarse. Deseando obtener a Kṛṣṇa como esposo, adoraban a la diosa Kātyāyanī con incienso, flores y otros objetos.
One day, the young gopīs left their garments on the shore as usual and began playing in the water while chanting of Lord Kṛṣṇa’s activities. Suddenly Kṛṣṇa Himself came there, took away all the garments and climbed a nearby kadamba tree. Wanting to tease the gopīs, Kṛṣṇa said, “I understand how fatigued you gopīs are from your austerities, so please come onto the shore and take back your clothes.”
Un día, como de costumbre, las jóvenes gopīs dejaron su ropa en la orilla y comenzaron a jugar en el agua mientras cantaban acerca de las actividades del Señor Kṛṣṇa. De repente, Kṛṣṇa mismo llegó allí, se llevó todas la ropa y trepó a un árbol kadamba cercano. Queriendo burlarse de las gopīs, Kṛṣṇa dijo: «Entiendo lo fatigadas que están las gopīs por sus austeridades, así que por favor vengan a la orilla y recuperen su ropa».
The gopīs then pretended to become angry and said the cold water of the Yamunā was giving them great pain. If Kṛṣṇa did not give them back their garments, they said, they would inform King Kaṁsa of all that had happened. But if He did give the clothes back, they would willingly carry out His orders in the mood of humble servants.
Entonces las gopīs fingieron estar enojadas y dijeron que el agua fría del Yamunā les estaba causando un gran dolor. Dijeron que si Kṛṣṇa no les devolvía su ropa, le informarían al rey Kaṁsa de todo lo que sucedió. Pero si Él les devolvía la ropa, ellas cumplirían voluntariamente Sus órdenes con la actitud de humildes sirvientas.
Śrī Kṛṣṇa respondió que no tenía ningún temor del rey Kaṁsa, y que si las muchachas realmente tenían la intención de seguir Su orden y ser Sus sirvientas, cada una debía ir inmediatamente a la orilla y tomar sus respectivas prendas. Las muchachas, temblando de frío, salieron del agua con las dos manos cubriéndose las partes íntimas. Kṛṣṇa, que sentía un gran afecto por ellas, habló de nuevo: “Debido a que mientras ejecutaban un voto se bañaron en el agua desnudas, han cometido una ofensa contra los semidioses, y para contrarrestarla deben ofrecer reverencias con las palmas unidas. Entonces su voto de austeridad logrará su pleno resultado”.
Śrī Kṛṣṇa respondió que no tenía ningún temor del rey Kaṁsa y que si las muchachas realmente tenían la intención de seguir Su orden y ser Sus sirvientas, cada una debía ir inmediatamente a la orilla y tomar sus respectivas prendas. Las muchachas, temblando de frío, salieron del agua con las dos manos cubriéndose las partes íntimas. The gopīs followed this instruction and, folding their hands in respect, offered obeisances to Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Satisfied, He gave them back their clothing. But the young girls had become so attracted to Him that they could not leave. Understanding their minds, Kṛṣṇa said that He knew they had worshiped Kātyāyanī to get Him as their husband. Because they had offered their hearts to Him, their desires would never again become tainted by the mood of materialistic enjoyment, just as fried barleycorns can no longer grow into shoots. Next autumn, He told them, their most cherished desire would be fulfilled.
Las gopīs siguieron esta instrucción, juntando las manos en señal de respeto, ofrecieron reverencias a Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Satisfecho, Él les devolvió su ropa. Pero las muchachas se sintieron tan atraídas por Él que no podían irse. Entendiendo su pensamiento, Kṛṣṇa dijo que Él sabía que adoraron a Kātyāyanī para conseguirlo como esposo. Debido a que le ofrecieron su corazón, sus deseos nunca más se verían contaminados por la actitud del disfrute materialista, tal como los granos de cebada fritos ya no pueden crecer hasta convertirse en brotes. Él les dijo que el próximo otoño su deseo más anhelado se vería cumplido.
Then the gopīs, fully satisfied, returned to Vraja, and Śrī Kṛṣṇa and His cowherd friends went off to a distant place to graze the cows.
Entonces las gopīs, completamente satisfechas, regresaron a Vraja, Śrī Kṛṣṇa y Sus amigos vaqueritos se fueron a un lugar distante a pastar las vacas.
Sometime later, when the boys felt disturbed by the great heat of summer, they took shelter at the base of a tree that stood just like an umbrella. The Lord then said that the life of a tree is most excellent, for even while feeling pain a tree continues to protect others from heat, rain, snow and so on. With its leaves, flowers, fruits, shade, roots, bark, wood, fragrance, sap, ashes, pulp and sprouts, a tree fulfills the desires of everyone. This kind of life is ideal. Indeed, said Kṛṣṇa, the perfection of life is to act with one’s vital energy, wealth, intelligence and words for the benefit of all.
Algún tiempo después, cuando los niños se sintieron perturbados por el intenso calor del verano, se refugiaron al pie de un árbol que se alzaba como un paraguas. Entonces el Señor dijo que la vida de un árbol es sumamente excelente, pues, incluso cuando siente dolor, el árbol continúa protegiendo a los demás del calor, la lluvia, la nieve, etc. Con sus hojas, flores, frutos, sombra, raíces, corteza, madera, fragancia, savia, cenizas, pulpa y brotes, un árbol satisface los deseos de todos. Esa clase de vida es ideal. Kṛṣṇa dijo, en verdad que la perfección de la vida consiste en actuar con la energía vital, la riqueza, la inteligencia y las palabras para el beneficio de todos.
After the Lord had glorified the trees in this way, the entire company went to the Yamunā, where the cowherd boys let the cows drink the sweet water and also drank some themselves.
Después de que el Señor glorificó a los árboles de esta manera, toda la compañía fue al Yamunā, donde los vaqueritos dejaron que las vacas bebieran el agua dulce, también ellos mismos bebieron un poco.
