 | In executing penance, one must be determined to return home, back to Godhead, and must decide to undergo all types of tribulations for that end. Even for material prosperity and name and fame one has to undergo severe types of penances, otherwise no one can become an important figure in this material world. Why, then, should there not be severe types of penances for the perfection of devotional service? An easygoing life and attainment of perfection in transcendental realization cannot go together. The Lord is more clever than any living entity; therefore He wants to see how painstaking the devotee is in devotional service. The order is received from the Lord, either directly or through the bona fide spiritual master, and to execute that order, however painstaking, is the severe type of penance. One who follows the principle rigidly is sure to achieve success in attaining the Lord’s mercy. | | | Al ejecutar penitencia, uno tiene que estar determinado a regresar al hogar, regresar a Dios, y estar dispuesto a someterse a toda clase de tribulaciones con ese fin. Incluso para conseguir prosperidad, nombre y fama materiales, uno tiene que someterse a severos tipos de penitencias; de lo contrario, nadie puede volverse una figura importante en este mundo material. ¿Por qué, entonces, existen severos tipos de penitencias para conseguir la perfección del servicio devocional? Una vida fácil y el logro de la perfección en el campo de la iluminación trascendental, no pueden ir juntos. El Señor es más astuto que cualquier otra entidad viviente; por lo tanto, Él desea ver cuán aplicado es el devoto en el servicio devocional. La orden se recibe del Señor, bien sea directamente, o a través del maestro espiritual genuino, y ejecutar esa orden, por exigente que sea, constituye el tipo severo de penitencia.
